ECO-WATCH – I.N.E.P PROJECT

COLLECTION AND MAINTENANCE OF DIVERSE TREE SPECIES OF SOUTH EASTERN DRY ZONE OF KARNATAKA AT BANGALORE, KOLAR & TUMKUR UNDER URBAN FORESTRY PROGRAMME.

Implementing Agency:

ECO-WATCH, Centre for Environment & Sustainable Development.

Introduction:

The Eco-Watch-INEP Project was initiated in March 2002. The Project is unique in its own way where in tree diversity of South Eastern Dry Zone of Karnataka is being studied by the students, teachers, general communities, NGOs & others. The Project covers the three districts of Tumkur, Kolar and Bangalore which come under the South Eastern Dry Zone of Karnataka.

This area was chosen for the project since no specific studies were being undertaken in the region. Eco-Watch had also been receiving a number of queries with respect to undertaking some environmental activities and programmes for the conservation and protection of the fast disappearing flora as also the fauna of this region.

In this respect, a preliminary survey and a study was undertaken in the districts of Tumkur & Kolar in order to arrive at a common conservation strategy through the local groups, students, teachers, NGOs & so on which would aid in further developing conservation models depending on the regional diversity. Due to the encouraging response this project was initiated. The Project involves various activities, which have been briefly discussed in this report. A considerable progress has been achieved since the project was initiated. A brief report of different activities/components of the project have been summarized in this report.

Mass awareness and education programme:

Teachers training workshop of Tumkur district at Deverayanadurga reserve forest area
Teachers being trained on soil quality analysis during one of the workshops

Selected teachers from various government schools were trained on Bio-diversity conservation, identification of flora-fauna and related environmental issues and topics.

These teachers in turn trained the students in their respective schools. The objective here is to sensitize the students on regional Bio-diversity, its importance and therefore the need to conserve them.
